Healthy Eating Tips for a child with Type 1 Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association recommends the same healthy diet for children who have type 1 diabetes as those who don’t. Eating adequate calories for your child to grow and develop properly is the primary goal.
Avoid sugary drinks and juice boxes. Instead choose water. Try infusing water with fresh fruits and herbs. There are many sparkling waters available that have minimal carbohydrates or sugar substitutes.
Choose whole grains to add fiber to their diet. There are many whole grain breads available as well as cereals. Look for those with at least 3 grams of fiber and less than 6 grams of sugar per serving. they contain fiber, minerals and other nutrients. They have whole grain pasta and oatmeal.
Here are some foods to maintain a healthy balanced diet:
Dark leafy vegetables (spinach, kale and collard greens)
Berries
Apples
Grapefruits
Tomatoes
Fish high in Omega 3 fatty acids (salmon)
Lean meats (chicken, turkey and lean cuts of beef)
Eggs
Nuts
Beans
Nonfat or low-fat dairy products
